The Liberia Athletics Federation (LAF) says it’s 2018 Club Athletics Championship will formally take place Saturday, June 30, beginning 8:00 am at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex, in Paynesville.

Six clubs are expected to participate in the 2018 Club Athletics Championship, with each club presenting a contingent of 36 athletes and at most four officials. Four athletes, comprising at least two males and two females are expected to represent each club, to participate in the nine events.

The nine (9) field events in the 2018 Club Athletics Championship are 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 4×1 relay, 4×4 relay, long jump, high jump and shot put.

The participating clubs are Conquerors, Liberty, Fast Track, Hillside, Zoyah and Fast Spike.

Mr. Mulbah Z. Zaza, President of the LAF, said the top three clubs will be awarded ‘Cash Prize’; whereas the Technical Department will scout cream of athletes to represent the country at upcoming international events.

Mr. Zayzay said if sponsored by the Ministry of Youth and Sports through the Government of Liberia, or the business community, the Liberia Athletics Federation (LAF) will compete in several international events.

Some of the international events the Liberia Athletics Federation (LAF) is expected to compete in include African Youth Games, in Algeria (July 19 – 28, 2018); African Senior Championship in Nigeria (August 1 – 5, 2018) and the World Youth Olympics, in Argentina (October 6 – 18).

“The championship is also intended to rank the clubs and select potential players that can represent the nation,” Zaza said.

Meanwhile, the LAF Chief disclosed that the national track team is inactive due to lack of financial support.

“Presently, we only have two senior athletes, Abraham Harris in the 100 meters and Kedmiel Enders, a high jumper who are training, so we need financial support to enable us restored the athletic team,” he said.

Besides the Annual National Club Championship, the LAF holds additional four competitions, including National High School Athletics Championship, World Athletics Day, National Time Day, Kids and the National County Meet.
