President George Manneh Weah has dedicated the newly constructed annexes of the Liberian Legislature with a call for complete maintenance in an effort to retain the structure.
The dedication took place today Thursday, July 19, 2018, at a well-attended program on Capitol Hill in Monrovia.
A total 12.9m US dollar was used for the construction of the two annexes which will host both houses members, including two separate chambers and a joint chambers for legislative proceedings.
The construction of the two annexes was made possible through a bilateral agreement with the Government and People’ Republic of China which was initiated in October 2016.
During the dedication ceremony, President Weah recounted China’s role in the development and attainment of peace in Liberia.
“China and Liberia have over 40years of friendship which both countries have strived for stronger development and mutual respect”.
According to the President, while it is true the friendship between the two countries remains stronger, Liberians must ensure that gifts are adequately taken care of in order to ensure an improved infrastructure for the country.
“Our problem in this country is maintaining things when they are given us, especially our bathrooms in these public buildings”.
“It is not about what they give us but how we maintain it”
He lauded the efforts of the Chinese construction company along with Liberians who aided in the completion of the building and further reaffirmed Liberia’s One-China-Policy which he said is cardinal to the country’s growth and development.
He urged members of the Legislature and those in the opposition to join hands in lifting country’s agenda in order to have a fulfilled Liberia
“Our Pro-Poor agenda is Single which is the People so If this government fails Liberia fails”.
For His part, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, Ji Jijun also lauded the Chinese contractors for successfully completing the project timely and providing quality work.
The Chinese ambassador stated that 2018 is a good year for both countries as both leaders were elected and share similar agenda which captures the people entirely,
“China President got re-elected while President Weah got elected also and both leaders have the similar agenda that target the people”.
Ambassador Jijun pledged his country’s unflinching support to the development with regards to the One-China Liberia Policy.
“China will furthermore increase training for Liberian youths, help set up new clinical at the Referral JFK hospital and more bilateral arrangements”.
The Ministry of Public Works directly supervised the project in collaboration with both houses committees on modernization. Under the bilateral arrangement for the building construction, a year maintenance service will be provided by China and subsequently, Liberians will be trained to take over.
The joint committee Chair on Modernization, Senator Commany Wesseh said the dedication marked a historic day at the capitol with important changes and improvements being made.
Sen. Wesseh provided a complete historicity of the present building which houses the legislature and thanked the Chines government for the gesture and promised to use it properly.
The capitol building annexes’ dedication is the first of several projects to be dedicated during the pending July 26 celebration throughout the country.
Liberia will celebrate her 171years of independence in which it got independence in July 1847
