As Country Celebrates 171st Independence Day, the Liberia National Football team known as the Lone Star will this weekend (July 22, 2018) face the Leone Star of Sierra Leone in the first international friendly over three years.
The Sunday’s friendly is part of the itinerary for the celebrations of Liberia’s 171st Independence Day commemoration.
The Sierra Leone Football Association has confirmed to the Monrovia Times their participation in the friendly, announcing that a 25-man delegation will arrive in Liberia shortly for the game.
The Sierra Leoneans are said to be in high momentum for the match as the players hope to catch an interaction with Soccer Legend, now President of Liberia, George Weah.
Ahead of the match, acting Lone Star coach, Thomas Kojo and team have invited 25 local players to training.
The team has been training since Monday at the ATS in central Monrovia.
Three oversea Liberian players currently on vacation in the country are expected to form part of the team as two of them (Teah Dennis and Theo Weeks) on Tuesday trained with the team at the ATS.
Several names from the U-20 national team that finished as Runner-up to Gambia in the recently held WAFU U-20 Competition are on the list.
The players currently training with the Lone Star have expressed happiness over their invitation to train with the team.
Some of them speaking to reporters at the ATS Tuesday said they have been idle for a protracted period as Liberia moves to one year without competitive football activities.
Liberian football has been at a standstill since last August at the close of the 2017 league season.
Elections disputes in Liberian Football have even made matters worse as there are no signals as to whether football actions will resume anytime soon.
Also, part of the celebrations of Liberia’s 171st Independence Day, the Chief Patron of Sports, President George Weah will lead members of the Executive Branch of government in a soccer match against the Speaker, the Pro-Temp and members of the Liberian Legislature.
The game will take place Saturday at the Samuel Kenyon Doe Sports in Paynesville on Saturday, July 21, 2018.
Just before that match, former players and legends of Invincible Eleven IE and Mighty Barrolle will try to renaissance the soccer eras before the civil war.
There have been series of meetings taking place amongst former IE and Barrolle players ahead of that match.
