‘It Is Not Plastic Rice’- Commerce Ministry Dispels Rumor After Laboratory Test

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry says the rumor that there is plastic rice on the Liberian market is not true.

In a release issued in Monrovia Wednesday, August 29, 2018, the Ministry said it has successfully conducted a laboratory test on what appeared to be ‘plastic rice’ but have found out that the commodity is original and safe for consumption.

According to the ministry, the laboratory test was piloted by the National Standard Laboratory (NSL) and ran from Friday, August 24, 2018 to Tuesday, August 28, 2018.

“The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is therefore pleased to announce to the general public the outcome of the Conformity Assessment Test. The test revealed that the sample of rice submitted is Identical, Organic and has a Property of Rice and that the sample is not a Plastic Rice. Therefore the pink-bagged rice under consideration is safe for consumption” the released mentioned.

The Ministry has meanwhile assured the public that it will continue to work in their interest and will continue to remain viable in executing its regulatory responsibilities as it relates to what goes into the Local market for food consumption.

It can be recalled that the management of United Commodities Incorporated (UCI) has described the producer of a ‘fake’ video on the company as an agent of destruction and fabricated lies, and challenged the shadowed person behind the camera to step up to the plate by making himself known to be confronted with the hard facts of existing reality regarding the company’s business activities.

In its clarification and setting the record straight UCI noted that a criminal minded individual has mounted a fabricated video with the intent of tarnishing its reputation.

In said video, the individual is seen with an empty bag of rice bearing the name UCI, while he displays two bowls of rice saying the bad one is from UCI and the other one has no provenance.

“Our various kinds of rice are widely known in the country to be the best, and we will do nothing to destroy such a good reputation. If the individual who produced such cheap propaganda was sure of what he is saying, he would have come out diligently to prove what he is claiming,” the release intoned.
