Songo Dropped, Johnson Injured As Liberia Gears Up For Zimbabwe Clash

The National Football Team, LoneStar Head Coach Thomas Kojo has named a 20 member squad to face Zimbabwe on Sunday, at the SKD Sports Complex.  

Coach Kojo 20 man squad comprises of both local and foreign players. But the bad news is Norway based Liberian striker Sam Johnson has withdrawn from the squad due to injury while goalkeeper Tommy Songo has been dropped from the squad that moved to camp on Monday evening in Paynesville City.  

Sam Johnson missed the first leg against Zimbabwe last year as his Chinese Club at the time played some delay tactics in releasing him for the match.

Mohammed Sangare of Newcastle United is also in the squad and is expected to make his long-awaited debut for the Lone Star. Goalkeepers named to the team are Boison Wynney de Souza, Ashley Williams and Ishaka Jalloh.  

Defenders include Teah Dennis, Joel Johnson Alajarin, Alvin Maccornel, Kemoh Kamara, Aloysius Simujla and Euguene Swen . The midfielders are Anthony Snoti Laffor, Murphy Dorley, Tonia Tisdell, Sylvanus Nimely, Mohammed Sangare, Allen Njie David Tweh and Fallah Sheriff.

The strikers are team captain William Jerbo, Kpah Sean Sherman and Sam Kollie. There was no room for the just ended LFA league top scorer Trokon Myers.  

Liberia plays Zimbabwe in a crunch Group H Qualifier which the country must win if it is to have a chance of reaching Cameroon 2019 Finals.

Meanwhile, the omission of goalkeeper Tommy Songo by coach Kojo has been a subject of serious discussion among football pundits and fans. Several fans said Kojo should have dropped Boison Wynney de Souza and kept Songo in the squad.

In a related development, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has named match officials for Liberia versus Zimbabwe African Cup of Nation’s qualifier to be played in Liberia this weekend.  

According to CAF, the referees for the match will come from Senegal while the match commissioner comes in from Equatorial Guinea.

Maguette Ndiaye will serve as Center Referee while Djibril Camara and El Hadji Malick Samba will serve as Assistant Referees Number 1 and 2 respectively.

Alioune Sow Sandigui was assigned as 4th official by CAF.  

Tadeo Nsue Onva of Equatorial Guinea has been assigned as Match Commissioner, while Sierra Leonean Rachid Sanusie is CAF’s Referee Assessor for Liberia versus Zimbabwe qualifier.

The match officials will begin arriving in Liberia on Wednesday, November 14, 2018.
