To Alleviate Flops In WASSCE, Government To Invest 500k

Liberian students rather unexciting performance in the just ended West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) did not come as a surprise to many. This is primarily due to the fact that they were inadequately tutored to meet the huge academic demands of the examination.

And so, the government of Liberia through the Ministry of Education has reckoned that and tailored US$500k to increase the passing scores on WASSCE and improve learning outcomes through a National Tutorial for all 12 graders in both public and private schools across the country.

Addressing a formal launch at the William VS Tubman High School in Monrovia, Education Minister Prof. D. Ansu Sonii said they have hired subject specialists (teachers with master skills) in subject areas and are expected to demonstrate 21st-century teaching methodology –which is learner-centered pedagogy.

“We are on this team set up by President George M. Weah to perform. And our performance is graded by your performance. We have done nothing if you do nothing. If the results from your examinations are not good then our living has got no returns”, he mentioned.

He indicated
“Every imaginable thing besides evil that can be done which ensures that the vision is accomplished we shall do it all to ensure you arrive because you are the jewels. You must cooperate with us. We at the Ministry of Education have no report card for our staff, it is your report card”.

The program we have initiated, he said “is intended for you to pass. So if you did not pass it mean you just do not want to pass. There will be a selection of the 10 best students after this year’s exam. We will have spent almost US$3 million and we will be looking for the best. We will spend half a million on this and US$2.5 million on registration of all of you”.

“Any school principal that produces one of those 10 students will get $2k as a bonus. And if he or she gets two the amount will be doubled. Those from hard to reach counties like Grand Kru, Maryland, Rivergee, Rivercess, Gbarpolu, Sinoe and Grand Gedeh will get $4k”, he added.
