William Jebo scored in the 72nd minutes to hand Liberia a victory over visiting Zimbabwe at the SKD Sports Complex in Paynesville.

Jebo finished a sweet connection between Tonia Tisdell and Sylvanus Nimely to give Liberia a 1-0 win over Group G Leaders Zimbabwe.
The win takes Liberia to the second spot on seven (7) points and gets the Lone Star’s qualification hopes back on course.

With the other fixture in the group between Congo Brazzaville and D.R. Congo ending 1-1; Liberia Lone Star will get a third Africa Cup of Nations Final appearance with a draw against Congo D.R. and hope Zimbabwe wins or draw against Congo Brazzaville in March 2019.

It was the first clean sheet kept for the Lone Star in this qualifier and also the first clean sheet for 18-year-old goalkeeper Ashley Williams who was winning his second senior cap for Liberia.

Ashley Williams, who celebrated his 18th birthday three days just before Sunday’s match, was a delight to watch in goal for Liberia.
He denied Knowledge Monsuga in the first half and thwarted efforts from the Warriors.

The match was spectated by the Chief-Patron of Sports and Africa Soccer Legend, Liberian President George Weah, along with Liberia’s Speaker of the House of Representatives and other high profile statesmen.

Sunday’s results mean Zimbabwe is on eight points at the top of the table, with Liberia in second on seven points, D.R. Congo in third spot with six points and Congo Brazzaville at the bottom on five points.

Liberia will travel to D.R. Congo in the group’s last match next March, while Zimbabwe will be at home on the same date to Congo Brazzaville.

Newcastle’s Mo Sangari who was named in the Liberian Lineup did not have any part to play as the coach choose not to use him.

However, Eugene Swen, a local lad for LISCR FC was given his debut as he played six minutes of the match.
