In National County Meet ‘Unbeaten Run’ Gbarpolu Ends Montserrado 2 Years

The National County Sports Meet began Sunday, December 16, 2018, with shock defeat for defending Champions, Montserrado County.

Gbarpolu County who had missed out on the quarterfinals in the past two years in which Montserrado County won a back-to-back championship, staged a 2-1 victory over the Champions at the Sanniquellie Sports Stadium in Nimba County at the start of the 24th edition of the National County Sports Meet.

Gbarpolu County got their first goal in just three minutes from the start of the match through controversial means, as the referee had to consult the first assistant ref to confirm if the ball had actually crossed the goal line.

Montserrado pilled the pressure and were leveled after ten minutes from the spot, but Gbarpolu restored their lead in the 66th minutes.

The defending champions created all the best of chances to pick up a draw or win the match in the last 15 minutes, but poor finishing robbed them of such.

The match spectated by Chief-Patron-of-Sports, President George Weah, and several other high government officials were packed with entertainment from both sides.

The 2-1 win for Gbarpolu County, was their third win over Montserrado County since Gbarpolu County joined the County Meet in 2004.

Sunday’s result also means Gbarpolu County became the first side to beat Montserrado County in the last two years, and the only county Montserrado is yet to beat.

In Group I opening fixture on Sunday, Nimba County and Sinoe County played each other to a 2-2 draw.
Sinoe who dominated Nimba in ball possession had to come from behind twice to force Nimba County to the 2-2 draw.

In other County Meet Opening results, Lofa County suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Margibi County at the Nancy B Doe Stadium in Kakata; before Grand Kru County whipped Grand Cape Mount County 1-0 in the group’s other match.

In Tubmanburg, the home side, Bomi County lost to visiting Bong County 2-1, while River Gee scored the biggest win of the weekend, beating Rivercess 3-1.

Grand Gedeh and Maryland held each other to a 1-1 draw in Zwedru.

The National County Sports Meet will continue Wednesday at the four venues.
