Swedish Ambassador Rejects Media Speculations
Amid wide speculation in some quarters of the country that the Swedish government is not in Support of President Weah PAPD government, Swedish Ambassador Ingrid Wetterqvist has discredited the allegation and described it as a means of disheartenment the good working relationship between her country and Liberia.
The Swedish envoy said they have a big development program in Liberia, adding that the Swedish government has been working with past governments and they will continue to work in Liberia.
According to her, the history of the Liberia-Sweden relationship dates back to the days of LAMCO, adding that during this time Liberia was one of the biggest exporters of iron ore in the world and the mining production stood for more than half of the country’s export.
Today, this relationship has been translated into bilateral relations with Swedish presence in Liberia, adding, Sweden is amongst the 4 highest donors and a partner in Liberia’s peace efforts; both at the global level with engagement in the UN and nationally with our development cooperation.
To this ends our dialogue with government and civil society alike is focused on democracy, human rights, gender equality and capacity building including ITP programmes and SI scholarships.
She said Sweden’s development strategy for Liberia, have three special focus areas, Strengthened democracy and gender equality, and greater respect for human rights, better opportunities and tools to enable poor people to improve their living conditions and Safeguarding human security and freedom from violence.
The Swedish envoy revealed that in 2018 Sweden government provided Liberia with approximately $36. 8 M USD, spread across different development partners.
The strategy for Swedish development cooperation with Liberia aims to contribute to peace and state building, by strengthening the Liberian social functions and creating the conditions for peaceful, inclusive and sustainable development.
“The Swedish Embassy strives for incorporating the gender perspective in everything that we do. We are deeply committed to the cause of gender equality and female empowerment. This means that we often have to bring up sensitive topics, such as the harmful practice of FGM and sexual violence.”
According to her, the vision of Sweden in Liberia is an inclusive and sustainable Liberia, where poverty is eradicated and gender equality is a reality, a Liberia free from corruption and a model for democracy.
“We believe in cooperation and aid to harmonize our work with Liberian partners working towards a common goal. We work from a holistic approach to solve a nexus of issues, including gender equality, human rights, youth employment, social justice, and environmental sustainability,” she stressed
The Swedish Representative made the clarification recently at Cuttington University Campus when she spoke to a cross-section of students in Bong County.
