Rep. Fofana Beefs Up Community Watch Forum Operation-Donates L$80,000
In an effort to have effective and efficient crime fighters in Electoral District #4 in Margibi County, the District Representative has donated the amount of eighty thousand (L$80,000) Liberian dollars to the Community Watch Forum (CWF).
The donation came days after representatives of the 16 Communities within the District called a meeting and appealed to Hon. Ben A. Fofana to help support the Forum to enable its members to carry on their night watch/patrol across the District.
The Community leaders in their statements said the operation of the Forum have become dormant in their respective Communities as the result of the lack of cash and materials support thereby increasing the crime rate.
Representative Fofana in response to the Community leaders appeal committed himself to provide over five million Liberian dollars to the sixteen Communities within the six years period of his representation in order to enhance the work of the Forum and minimize crimes.
The Margibi District #4 Representative said he will give each Community five thousand Liberian dollars on a monthly basis to beef up the operation of the Forum.
Presenting the first eighty thousand Liberian dollars to the 16 Communities through their leaders and the Margibi branch chairman of the Community Watch Forum on behalf of the Lawmaker, Mr. Jerry Sumo special assistant to Hon. Fofana cautioned the Community Watch Forum against causing a problem for peaceful citizens.
Mr. Sumo narrated that people who work with the Community Watch Forum are not security people but are rather helpers to security; as such they need to know their role and responsibility.
He said the intent of the Lawmaker’s support to the Forum is not for its members to cause problem adding that by doing so, the good intentions of his Boss will be misinterpreted, misapplied and the fund will be misappropriated.
“When we are having our people in the Community to do the watchmen job for us, they should be people that have the necessary charisma and that charisma they should not be the one to create harbor for our people overnight because there are times people look for opportunity but the opportunity of the Community Watch Forum should not be used in a negative manner” he said.
Mr. Sumo used the occasion to call on the Community Watch Forum Chairman and leaders of the various Communities to identify people with good character and people that will be willing to work with their community members.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Forum, Mr. Sam Zor thanked Hon. Fofana for always identifying the Community Watch Forum. According to him, from the first term of Hon. Fofana to his second term, he has been one person who has always reached out to the Forum.
Mr. Zor assured Mr. Sumo that the money will be used for the purpose intended but recommended that the Lawmaker extends hands to other parts of the District.
The CWF chairman also appealed to Hon. Fofana to talk to his colleagues to be able to allocate funding for the Forum from the Social Development Fund and other funding that goes to the County.
For his part, the County Security Program Officer of Margibi lauded the Representative for helping the forum but call for similar support to be extended to the Liberia National Police (LNP), the Liberian Immigration Service (LIS) and the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA) in order for the County to be free of crime.
Mr. Ocarleus Subah at the same time called for the collective efforts of all the Lawmakers of the County in supporting the security sector so as to have a safe Community and County.
