Over Tuition Hike, Senate Summons Education Minister Prof. Sonnii
Liberia’s Education Minister Ansu Sonnii has been summoned by the Liberian Senate over the arbitrary hike in tuition and other school-related fees across the country
The decision to cite Minister Sonii followed a communication to that body by Montserrado County freshman Senator Abraham Darius Dillon.
In his communication Tuesday, Senator Dillon said despite the economic hardship, the country is witnessing an increase in tuition at both public and private institutions across Liberia.
Senator Dillon said most parents are unable to enroll their children for the current academic year which has already commenced as a result of the hike in tuition and other related fees.
According to the Senator, most of the schools are currently selling materials including uniforms, books, and T-Shirt at a high cost, creating an economic burden for struggling parents and guardians.
Senator Dillon said it is important that the Minister of Education explains how the government intends to address the situation.
