The Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) has expressed its disappointment over recent remarks made by President George M. Weah at his Forkyklon Jlaleh Family Fellowship. In his sermon on Sunday, February 5, 2023, President Weah referred to the MDR Governing Council Chairman, Sen. Prince Y. Johnson, as a “killer” and “blackmailer.” The MDR has rejected these claims and has reminded President Weah that Senator Johnson supported him during the runoff election in 2017.
The MDR also expressed its disappointment over the president’s short memory span and the fact that he has now chosen to label Senator Johnson with such negative terms. The party also raised concerns over the president’s threat to dismiss all government officials appointed from the MDR and his vindictive nature.
The MDR has reminded President Weah that Senator Johnson is a revolutionary leader who has been consistently advocating for his people and participated in the Liberian Civil War due to the extreme marginalization, killing, and intimidation of Nimbaians. The MDR has also pointed out that the vices that led to the civil war, such as extrajudicial killings, corruption, and nepotism, still persist in the country.
The MDR has strongly condemned the comments made by President Weah and has stated that it is no longer supporting his reelection bid. The party has signed a statement by the Vice Chair for Press and Publicity, Kelvin D. Just. Mattaldi.
